The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest on earth covering 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million square km) and includes territory belonging to nine South American nations. 60% of the rainforest is in Brazil, followed by Peru with 13 percent, and then smaller amounts in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Average yearly rainfall across the Amazon is approximately 7.5 feet (2,300 mm). In the northwest portion of the Amazon, almost 20 feet (6,000 mm) of rain can fall per year.
